Pitching In

My husband has been volunteering at the local Children's Hospital for a few weeks. He has two assignments. One is a greeter in the lobby and the other one is at the library cart. He likes both areas. Yesterday morning he got a call that he was needed in the OR. We joked that we hoped they did not expect him to do surgery. The job he was needed for was simple but very important. He was the person that notified the families that their children were out of surgery. He beeped them with their assigned beeper and then walked them to the room where the doctor was waiting to speak to them. During their wait, he supplied snacks and drinks. As each family left, they thanked him. It was a simple job for a complicated reason. No family wants to see their child in surgery so a friendly face who takes care of your needs is so comforting. The hospital thanked him for pitching in. He may need to do it again today. I am proud of him. His retirement is not only about him and that is something to be praised.
